Car racing started soon after the the first cars using petrol as a fuel were manufactured in 1894. The races were basically organized to compare the reliability and performance of two cars of the same make or cars manufactured by two different companies. These races were held on racing tracks initially.
As more car models were developed, city to city racing became popular in France, with the first race from Paris to Bordeaux held in 1895. Auto races were also held in the same year in the United States. Car races were also held between major cities of different countries.
In the 1930's, manufacturers of many high priced cars like the Mercedes-Benz and Bugatti constructed cars suitable for racing. The engine power was boosted. Cars had a maximum weight restriction of 750 kg. This was acheived by using light weight alloys made of aluminium.
